Why the MBT?

You might be wondering what all this means? Insurance terms are confusing and it’s hard to know exactly what you’re getting. We’ve put together 10 reasons why the MBT is the best choice for you.

  • Insurance contributions are kept in your name, for your benefit. They are also protected by the CDIC (this is important).
  • Our Reserve Withdrawal Policy means you can withdraw excess funds if your insurance coverage isn’t enough.
  • Our insurance partners are the best in the country. They belong to Assuris, which protects you in the unlikely event that the insurance company fails.
  • If your earnings decrease, Class Drop Protection helps to maintain your Extended Health Benefits. This protection lasts until the benefit year ends.
  • Faster reimbursement of claims. Online claim submission and direct deposit mean you get your money back faster!
  • If you get hurt and are unable to work, short and long term disability benefits are available to help.
  • Critical Illness Insurance offers a lump sum payment to help you right away if you are diagnosed with a covered critical illness.
  • Lifeworks is a concierge Employee Assistance Program designed to help you with anything from short term counselling services to finding a new doctor or researching your next vacation.
  • Our retirement program has a variety of options to invest your money, and Great West Life has tools to help you decide which is the best option for you. The fund manager is one of the top investment managers in Canada – they are taking good care of your money.
  • You have instant access – anytime – to your RRSP accounts and Health and Dental coverage. Change your investment options, check your benefits or find a massage therapist, instantly!

FAQs

  • What do I get?

The MBT offers very comprehensive and competitive coverage for its members. We have 7 Benefit Classes based on income. For example, if your income is $8000 per year, you will be in Class 3 and receive the benefits listed in that class. The Chart below shows what benefits are available at each income level.

    mbt-benefit-program-summary
  • When do my benefits start?

When you enrol in the MBT you are immediately eligible for:

    • a $10,000 Group Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D policy),
    • access for you and your dependents to an Employee Assistance Program, as well as
    • the opportunity to purchase a health and dental plan to cover you until you qualify for the main group plan

The Benefit year is June 1 to May 31 and class level is based on your earnings as a full UBCP member from the previous calendar year. For example, if you become a full UBCP member on October 15, 2016, you would be eligible for coverage June 1, 2017. Your class level as of that date would be based on your earnings from October 15, 2016 to Dec. 31, 2016.

  • What do the different classes in the chart mean?

The different classes of coverage are based on your income. For example, if your income is between $500 – $4,499 you qualify for Class 1 and you receive Life and AD&D coverage. If your income is $12,000 you would qualify for Class 4 and would be eligible for Life and AD&D, Prescriptions, Paramedical, Orthotics, Travel Insurance, Eye exams, and Vision coverage, as well as Dental coverage. Class levels are based on calendar year earnings and changes occur June 1 of each year.

Within each Class you can see which benefits you receive as well as how much coverage is available for each benefit.

  • Do I still have to pay MSP?

Yes, you will still need to pay for Medical Services Plan (MSP). Our benefits are extended benefits which means they offer coverage beyond your basic MSP.
